Problem
Booking requests and repeated customer questions interrupt restaurant staff, while cancellations, complaints and after-hours messages still need a clear response path.
Solution
Receives incoming WhatsApp messages through a webhook.
Uses Claude to route booking requests, cancellations, complaints and general inquiries.
Writes booking and conversation records to Google Sheets.
Returns an appropriate WhatsApp reply, or logs the issue for staff escalation.
What I built
- Booking request handling
- General inquiry responses
- Cancellation routing
- Complaint classification
- Staff escalation paths
- Conversation logging
- Webhook acknowledgement
Technical implementation
n8n rather than a custom Node backend: the workflow is a sequence of triggers and integrations, so orchestration stays visually inspectable instead of hidden inside handwritten glue that would need its own hosting and error handling.
Claude handles the routing decision because intent classification over real-world phrasing is a poor fit for keyword matching and does not justify a trained classifier at this volume.
Ambiguous or unrecognised messages route to the staff-escalation branch — the workflow fails toward a human, not toward a confident-sounding wrong answer.
Complaints, judgement-call cancellations, and anything outside the defined intents are logged and escalated rather than auto-resolved.
In a tested workflow execution, the system produced a WhatsApp response in under 30 seconds.
Outcome
A working prototype demonstrating intent routing, booking updates, customer replies, escalation and logging in one workflow.
